Eden is a plant-based fine-dining concept based in Johannesburg. The brand draws its name and central idea from the Garden of Eden, imagined as a place of abundance where the natural world provided everything people needed to survive.
The goal was to create a plant-based restaurant identity that felt indulgent, ceremonial, and sophisticated rather than overly minimal or health-focused. I developed a visual world inspired by Early Renaissance still-life painting, religious iconography, and the ornate visual language of Western art from the period.
Fruit, vegetables, and dining objects were treated as symbols of abundance and reverence. I transformed digital photographs of produce, still-life arrangements, and medieval objects such as goblets and gauntlets in Photoshop, giving them the texture and depth of oil paintings. These compositions were paired with ornamental arches, radiating forms, and decorative frames created in Illustrator.
The resulting imagery blurred the line between food photography, historical painting, and collage. Familiar ingredients were elevated into objects of ceremony, helping the restaurant present plant-based dining as generous and luxurious rather than restrictive.
Copywriting expanded the brand beyond its visual identity. Phrases such as “All are welcome to the Garden of Eden,” “Let us eat our daily plant,” and “Give us this day our daily plant” reinterpreted familiar religious language with warmth and playfulness. These messages reinforced the ideas of nourishment, community, and shared experience at the center of the concept.
The system was applied across menus, matchboxes, coasters, and other restaurant touchpoints. Deep greens, warm terracotta, gold, and cream created a rich palette that referenced gardens, soil, candlelight, and historic interiors.
My role included concept development, brand strategy, art direction, visual identity, copywriting, image manipulation, illustration, and the design of print and hospitality applications.
