Compost is a concept for an organization that collects food waste from restaurants and public events, then converts it into compost for farmers and tree planters. Its mission is to reduce the environmental impact of discarded food while returning valuable nutrients to the land and supporting greater food security.
The challenge was to create a brand capable of addressing a serious environmental issue without feeling overly technical, alarming, or difficult to engage with. Compost needed to make conversations about food waste feel relevant to everyday life and encourage people to see discarded food as something that could continue moving through a useful cycle.
I developed the brand around the familiar visual language of postage and delivery. The name “Compost” naturally contains the word “post,” creating an opportunity to connect the movement of food waste with the idea of sending something from one destination to another. Instead of treating waste as the end of the journey, the identity presents it as something that can be redirected and given a new purpose.
This concept shaped the brand’s stamp-like graphics, sticker-inspired applications, typography, and messaging. The visual system borrowed from postal labels and packaging to give the organization a recognizable and approachable personality while reinforcing ideas of collection, movement, and redistribution.
The campaign “From: Food, To: Fork” extended that language into a simple message about circularity. It positioned composting as part of a continuing system in which food scraps are collected, transformed into nutrient-rich soil, and eventually used to support the growth of new food.
The concept was carried across the brand identity and website, creating a cohesive system that could introduce the organization, explain its process, and invite restaurants, event organizers, and members of the public to participate. Through familiar language and playful visual references, the brand made a complex environmental subject easier to understand and discuss.
My role covered naming, brand strategy, visual identity, campaign development, copywriting, and web design.
